Broadcast Your Love: Messaging Change

Broadcast Your Love: Messaging Change

Do you ever ask yourself if you need to work on your communication skills? I mean you’re a texting machine, you know all the “ins and outs” of social media and you can bang out an email any time. You probably even have mad skills for getting around on the internet, not to mention using apps and programs most of us haven’t heard of yet. What else is there…?

The fact is our whole society revolves around communication, whether in a digital space or face-to-face conversation. Try to think of a situation where you are trying to accomplish pretty much any goal. Do you want to get your weekend plans figured out with your friends? You need to be able to communicate. Negotiations with your parents? You need to be able to communicate. How about completing school assignments? That may not one you’re not too happy about, but you still need to communicate.

What about landing and keeping a great job? You may be shocked to learn you will need strong communication skills for this too. According to a study by the nonprofit Afterschool Matters that helps teenagers become paid apprentices, the shift to a “knowledge economy” has generated concerns for young people. A knowledge economy values the quality, amount, and trade of knowledge. Skills that are important in this new workplace include communication, critical thinking, leadership, and teamwork. However, young people are beginning careers without these important skills required by employers.

Research explains this lack of soft skills through studies that show today’s teens use texting as their primary means of communication. Because of this focus on texting, their ability to engage face-to-face is diminishing, leading to the general decline of communication skills. This deterioration reduces a young person’s ability to function effectively in society, severely hampering their workplace potential.

There is good news though! At Broadcast Your Love (BYL), we are committed to providing creative, enriching communications-focused programs for youth. We will help you develop these vital skills with communication initiatives that incorporate technology to improve your reading and writing skills and develop your social and emotional abilities. We have plans to help you to become active members of your communities and increase your potential to achieve successful careers.

Are you ready to turn up your game a notch? Well, stay tuned and connected, and we’ll keep “broadcasting our love.”
